This award is designed for staff who work with children and young people in a range of health and social care settings and work roles, including residential care, foster care and community-based provision. Candidates may be engaged in either a paid or voluntary capacity and would be expected to hold a position where they can demonstrate they are responsible for their own workload.
This award is designed to enhance the existing skills, knowledge and understanding of staff, in order to further improve the standard of care they provide, thereby providing children and young people with a better chance of achieving their potential and enjoying a satisfactory quality of adult life.
Learners must complete eight units, four mandatory units and a further four optional units relevant to their particular work role and setting. Employers and assessment centres will advise on selecting the most suitable units for each learner upon enrolment.
The learning materials are designed for learners to work through on their own, with the help of a tutor/assessor. Learners work through the support materials and complete activities and assessments for each unit. Your tutor/assessor will also observe you carrying out practical tasks during your normal working hours in order that you can generate the performance evidence of each unit.
On completion of this programme learners may be able to progress on to a Level 4 programme, such as an NVQ, concerned with health and social care. Alternatively, they may wish to follow a programme of study which focuses on the care, welfare and/or development of children and young people.
