Level 1 Award in Disability Awareness

Course outline

The Disability Discrimination Act aims to prevent discrimination against disabled people and applies to all employers and everyone who provides a service to the public. This award has been developed to help learners enhance their knowledge and understanding of disability and impairment. This programme is designed for anyone who comes into contact with disabled people either through their work or in their daily lives. It explores some of the barriers faced by disabled people at work and considers how to implement best practice in the workplace. The programme will be ideal for those who would like to gain an increased understanding of the nature of disability and of impairment, and will have positive implications for their own role and for their employing organisation.

Course content

The programme consists of one mandatory unit, made up of the following sections:

  • Section 1: Introduction to disability awareness
  • Section 2: Ways of looking at disability
  • Section 3: Barriers faced by disabled people
  • Section 4: Putting language into action

Course delivery and assessment

Candidates will be provided with the course materials for the programme and will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and test their knowledge. The course is externally assessed through a multiple choice test. The learning materials include a quiz which will help learners to test their learning and will also support those who are working towards the Award and who wish to practice for the multiple-choice test.

Progression opportunities

On successful completion of this course, the learner can access a wide range of Level 2 qualifications, such as equality and diversity or volunteering.
