The qualification is designed for people who are employed in a first line management role within an organisation. It is suitable for managers in any industry and applies equally to public, private and the third sector.
This NVQ will allow first line managers to both acquire and demonstrate the skills needed to build and manage their teams and to improve personal management skills such as problem solving, decision making, communication, and leadership. It will also enable them to motivate and coach others and to help team members address problems affecting their performance.
The programme comprises the following mandatory units:
To achieve the qualification, learners must complete all of the above units, plus a further three units selected from a range of units focusing on different aspects of the management role. The mandatory units are those which are relevant to all managers, and the optional units are designed to be relevant to specific job roles, allowing candidates to choose units most relevant to them.
Each candidate is assessed on their ability to perform tasks competently, and whether they have the correct knowledge and understanding to be competent at those tasks. The assessment is undertaken by a qualified assessor who examines evidence of competence. Because the qualification is a vocational one built around job roles, it is designed to be assessed in the workplace and does not have an examination or end test. Instead, learners will compile a portfolio of evidence with guidance from their tutors.
This qualification forms part of a suite of Leadership and Management NVQs at Levels 2, 3, 4 and 5. Individuals who achieve this qualification will have the opportunity to move on to the Levels 4 and 5 NVQs in Management as they progress in their management career.
