The lifelong learning sector includes post-compulsory further education, including sixth form colleges and specialist colleges; armed forces education; offender, adult and community learning; and work-based learning (WBL). All new entrants to teaching in the lifelong learning sector are required to complete awards preparing them, and enabling them to teach. This programme examines the underlying concepts and principles associated with the candidate's area of teaching, considering how to evaluate and interpret these within the post-16 sector.
Available at Levels 3 and 4, Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) comprises one unit that can be completed as a ‘stand-alone’ award, or as an embedded part of the Level 3 and 4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS). It is appropriate for those who require a basic introduction to teaching, training or tutoring in the lifelong learning sector; are seeking career progression within their area of work; or require evidence toward the underpinning knowledge for the N/SVQ in Learning and Development. It is a ‘threshold licence’ to practice and the first step on the route to associate and qualified teacher status.
Candidates will be provided with the course materials for the programme and will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and test their knowledge. There are mandatory assignments in both theory and practice that will be assessed by your tutor. All of these must be completed successfully in order to achieve the qualification.
Candidates undertaking PTLLS who are not yet in teaching, will be observed delivering microteaching for a minimum of thirty minutes. Those who are already teaching or training can choose to deliver either an observed classroom or workplace session for a minimum of thirty minutes, or microteaching.
Successful completion of this programme will enable candidates seeking qualified teacher status (QTLS) to accumulate credits that count towards the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS). It will also provide evidence toward an N/SVQ in Learning and Development.
