NCFE Level 2 Award in the Prevention and Control of Infection

Who is it for?

Infection control is relevant to numerous sectors, including food preparation and medical services, and is of major concern in hospitals and other health care settings. It is the responsibility of everyone who works in, or visits, such environments to ensure that the spread of infection is avoided. The qualification is ideal for learners who wish to gain an understanding of the causes of infection and how these can be managed and controlled.

Course description

The NCFE Level 2 Award in the Prevention and Control of Infection is designed to raise awareness of infection control legislation and policies. Candidates will look at the methods of cleaning and waste disposal that help prevent the spread of infection, along with the personal protective equipment they should use for their own safety. This knowledge will be underpinned by an increased understanding of the causes of infections, the conditions in which they thrive and the ways that they can be spread.

Course content

The programme consists of three mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: The principles of infection prevention and control
  • Unit 2: Causes and spread of infection
  • Unit 3: Cleaning, decontamination and waste management

Course delivery and assessment

Candidates will be provided with the course materials for the programme and will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and test their knowledge. This qualification is internally assessed with the candidate producing a portfolio of work that covers all learning outcomes. This will mainly consist of a written assessment for each unit, which will be completed by the candidate and internally assessed by the training provider, as well as two simple observation exercises.

A comprehensive tutor guide is supplied to accompany these materials. To view a sample of a tutor guide, click here.

Progression opportunities

On successful completion of this course, the learner may wish to progress on to Level 2 and 3 qualifications in the areas of health and/or social care. Alternatively they may wish to progress onto Level 2 NVQs in these fields.
