Improved training for care staff

Thursday 10th April 2008

‘Caring Choices: Who will pay for long-term care?’ is a nationwide initiative, made up of a collaboration of fifteen organisations, representing all aspects of the long-term care system. Caring Choices invited more than 700 older people, carers and others to share their experiences and views to help shape future policy on long-term care for older people. A report concludes the collaboration’s programme of work.

One of the main findings of the programme was a high level of dissatisfaction with how social care is delivered and the quality of provision. Skills for Care, the employment-led strategic body for workforce development in adult social care in England, supports the findings of the report. According to Angela Rowe, Skills for Care Chief Executive, ‘A better trained workforce is clearly key to making sure that people who use services get high-quality care delivered to consistent standards, and we are already seeing how the common induction standards are making sure that new staff can deliver quality care in a rapidly changing sector. But it’s vital that experienced care workers feel valued which is why we developed a Continuing Professional Development Strategy for social care aimed at senior managers, policy makers and commissioners to help them to develop their staff.’

The health care sector is constantly changing, meaning that a trained workforce is essential to maintain that high-quality care is delivered to consistent standards. Tribal offers a selection of health and social care programmes. These include NVQs in Health and Social Care, NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Dementia Awareness and Level 2 Certificate in the Safe Handling of Medicines. All of these courses are accredited by awarding bodies that are nationally recognised.
