NCFE Certificate in Providing a Healthier School Meals Service Level 1

Course outline

This course is targeted at those involved in the preparation and service of healthy school meals. It looks at the nutritional needs of children and the government’s recommended guidelines for a balanced diet. In addition the learner will gain awareness regarding different methods to promote and market healthy eating to children.

Course content

The programme contains two units:

  • Unit 1: How to provide a range of healthier foods and meals in the school dining room
  • Unit 2: Develop marketing ideas and materials to promote healthier food choices to the target market through the healthier school meals service

Each unit contains tasks and activities designed to cover the specific learning outcomes.

Course delivery and assessment

Candidates will be provided with the course materials for the programme and will be required to work through a series of tasks and activities designed to reinforce the learning process and test their knowledge. Each candidate is required to undertake a short externally set multiple-choice question paper.

Progression opportunities

This course will be useful to anyone working in the provision of school meals or who wants to develop a career in this area. Having successfully achieved this qualification, the learner may wish to progress on to further qualifications concerned with food preparation or diet and nutrition.
